The competition bowls off June 28 in Berbice, with Zonal winners bagging GY$ 300,000 and a coveted spot in the national finals.
The ultimate champion will walk away with a staggering GY$1.7 million, while the runners-up will receive GY$700,000.
Even losing semi-finalists and zonal finalists are set to be rewarded, with purses of GY$ 300,000 and GY$ 100,000, respectively.
Captain of the defending champs Titans, Leon Johnson credited the organizers and those involved for running a good competition.
He stated that the tourney has set the bar higher for Tape-Ball cricket. The former West Indies Test batsman said he and his team were looking forward to this year’s competition.
Johnson explained that with some 80 teams involved, the number being increased from last season, is also a raise in the level of competition, with twice the teams equaling twice the competition.
Ex-Guyana all-rounder turned businessman, Steven Jacobs who has remained a figure behind the support of the concept since it’s birth, lauded the organizers for their continued development of the tournament’s brand.
Jacobs said the increase in teams should not be taken lightly as the tournament continues to focus heavily on comradery and community cohesion. He urged them to strive for a regional and international level in the tournament with additional emphasis placed on the women.
Kares Engineering, the tournament title sponsor’s representative Natasha Persaud said the company was happy to remain title sponsor for a third year while urging Guyanese to come out and support the tournament.
Representatives from KFC, Giftland Guyoil, Guyana lottery among a few others echoed similar views as they were equally happy to either be onboard for the first time or continued sponsorship of the event.
The Trophies were for the third year, made by Guyanese craftsman Stephen Mckenzie, who during his brief remarks after unveiling his work, hoped to see the tournament reach an international level one day.
The Main trophy which represents the six races is made of six different species of wood, including a few different species of Silverballi, including Yellow and Brown along with a mix of Crabwood and Kabukalli, with four additional trophies being awarded to the 4 independent zone winners.
Deodat Indar, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, who represented President Dr. Irfaan Ali at the launch said it’s difficult for tournaments to grow so quickly and congratulated them on their growth from strength-to-strength in just three years.
He noted that cricket brings Guyanese together and this tournament is no different, thanking the organizers and teams for helping keep cricket at the pinnacle of sports in Guyana and abroad.
Former organizer of the Face-off Tape-ball tournament, Paul Bonar popularly known as DJ Stress, was presented with a plaque of appreciation for his contributions to this specific format of cricket over the years.
Meanwhile, Richard Sukdeo of Telco Solutions presented a brand new cell phone to junior national all-rounder Shamar Apple, yesterday following FL Sports initiating the generous move.
The preliminary rounds will be held across four zones: Berbice (June 28-29), East Bank/West Demerara (July 5-6), Georgetown/East Coast Demerara (July 19-20), and Essequibo (July 26-27). The tournament will culminate in a grand finale on August 3rd at the National Stadium, Providence.
Registration is currently open for a fee of GY$ 30,000 per team. (Clifton Ross)
