‘Baby Skello’ remanded for Blasphemous Libel

Kaieteur News – Guyana’s local artiste Daniel Wharton called ‘Baby Skello’ was remanded on Friday to prison for Blasphemous Libel.
Wharton appeared at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Judy Latchman, who remanded him to prison until July 1, 2025.
The charge stemmed from a distasteful and vulgar song Wharton released on his TikTok page about the Hindu Goddess, Mother Lakshmi.
Following the release of the song, the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) issued a stern warning to local artiste demanding the removal of the song that portrays the Hindu Goddess in a vulgar, sexually explicit, and blasphemous manner.
The Commission, which condemned the song, said it was also exploring legal action under the Laws of Guyana.
In a statement released on Friday, May 9, 2025, the ERC described the song as deeply offensive to the Hindu community. Further, the ERC requested that Wharton remove the song from all digital platforms and halt any public dissemination.
“The Commission views this action as a necessary step forward in mitigating further harm and signaling that such expressions have no place in our plural society,” the ERC said.
Wharton removed the song and issued an apology to the Hindu community on social media. He also apologized in the form of a song that was released on his social media platforms.
Following the public outrage, Wharton was arrested by police in connection with the song and held in police custody for at least 24 hours.
