Kaieteur News – A Nigerian National was sentenced to six years in jail on Thursday after he and accomplices ripped off a Guyanese woman and a dozen others of hundreds of thousands of dollars in a romance scam.
The convict, Matthew Ejike Nwachukwu, was part of a scam where the mastermind pretended to be German and made the woman fall in love with him before scamming her of $155,000 to clear gifts he never sent to her. She was not his only victim, according to an investigation conducted by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU). Nwachukwu committed the scams in 2022.
He appeared at the Linden Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where Magistrate Rushelle Liverpool found him guilty of two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment each on both counts. Ejike Nwachukwu was charged and remanded on both charges back in 2022.
One of his victims reportedly recounted during the trial that she was befriended by a German man online and eventually developed a long-distance relationship with him. She recalled that in July 2022, her German lover said that he would send packages for her via FedEx.
Three days later, she received a call from a foreign number stating that the packages had arrived in Guyana and that she would be required to pay the sum of GD$155,000 to various persons at the McKenzie Post Office to uplift the package.
According to the woman, she believed the packages to be genuine after she was informed that diamonds and other valuables were inside and that the $155,000 must be paid to ensure that they would not be confiscated on the basis of Money Laundering.
Police said that at the trial, SOCU produced evidence showing that Ejike Nwackukwu was an accessory to the crime. He reportedly arranged agents on behalf of the “German mastermind” to uplift money from the victim. SOCU reportedly said that they are still trying to find the “mastermind” and other persons involved. According to SOCU, it is a massive scheme being operated by Nigerian nationals operating in Guyana.
