Kaieteur sports – Sports Organiser, Physical fitness instructor, community and Sports activists Eli Hazel, has once again arranged a community event to coincide with a significant day.
Hazel has planned a 10 miles Father’s Day run on Sunday June 15th around the Town of New Amsterdam in recognition of Fathers.
The activity is expected to commence at 06:00hrs at Lot 40 Stanleytown, proceed through No 41 Scheme, through Vryheid into Angoy’s Avenue, around Tucber Park, then along Winkle Road, into Garrison Road along NATI and The National Psychiatric Hospital and The Burnham Park into Esplanade Road, enter Strand (Water Street) through New Amsterdam along Stanleytown around Tacama Turn into Main Street to conclude at its place of origin. He said, the run is expected to last between 1 ½ to 2 hrs.
According to Hazel he will be accompanied by his three grandchildren. He stated that one of his grandsons will be running the entire distance with him, whilst the other two (boy and girl) will be riding bicycles.
Hazel, who resides in Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, is a qualified Physical Fitness Instructor. He is the holder of a Certificate from the British Sports Trust Harvard Community Sports Leaders Course which was held by the British High Commission. The course dealt with Sports Management, Marketing, Organizing, Coaching and Discipline in Sports among other areas. He is the founder of the Unity for the Nation Group in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
He said that others especially fathers who wants to participate can join, in order to show love and appreciation especially to fathers.
According to Hazel, fathers and men in general must not only be seen in a bad light and as disciplinarians, but as people who can spread love and be role models. Hazel thinks that the timing of the event is very significant. He said that at 65, he thinks that he can still contribute significantly in Uniting the Nation. Using his Unity for the Nation initiative, he said that Unity and Leadership is needed in Guyana now more than ever.
Over the years the community activist has been organizing a number of community and sporting and other events across Berbice. One of his highlights was doing a shackle walk in Chains in remembrance of slavery. Some other events include runs, walks, jogs, cycling, speeches, spelling, physical fitness, in recognition of mothers, fathers, youths, the elderly, unity, health, good manners, peace and a number of other initiatives.
