Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have officially ended following a string of underwhelming results in Group D of the Concacaf Qualifiers.
The Golden Jaguars, who showed flashes of promise early in the campaign, now face Montserrat tonight from 8:00 pm at the National Track and Field Centre in their final group match, playing purely for pride in front of their home crowd.
Coach Wayne Dover and his squad will have to regroup mentally and emotionally after a disappointing and lackluster showing throughout the qualifiers.
The team suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat to Nicaragua, followed by a 0-2 loss to Panama; results that effectively sealed their fate and knocked them out of contention for a place in the expanded 48-team World Cup, set to be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Golden Jaguars starting line-up ahead of their clash with Nicaragua in the FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The only bright moment in an otherwise grim campaign came in the form of a 3-1 victory over Belize, where Guyana displayed moments of cohesion and attacking prowess. Unfortunately, that spark failed to carry over into the more critical matchups.
Montserrat, also eliminated from the competition, sits fourth in Group D and similarly claimed their only win against Belize.
When Guyana and Montserrat last met in Barbados, both teams battled to a goalless draw in a result that did little to inspire confidence in either camp.
Despite the disappointment, Guyana will be looking to close out the qualifiers on a high note.
The final fixture offers an opportunity for redemption, particularly for a squad eager to restore faith among fans and stake claims for the national team’s future direction.
Players from Slingerz Football Club, including Leo Lovell, Romaine Brackenridge, Kelsey Benjamin, Curtez Kellman, Darron Niles, and veteran goalkeeper Akel Clarke, are likely to feature prominently.
They will be joined by GDF duo Chris Macey and Colin Nelson, Daniel Wilson of Western Tigers, and Neron Barrow from GPF FC.
Overseas-based defender Kvist Paul, who plies his trade with Waterhouse FC in Jamaica, is also expected to bolster the backline.
With the World Cup being hosted in the Concacaf region, this campaign carried added significance for the Golden Jaguars.
However, inconsistent performances, lapses in defense, and a lack of attacking sharpness have ultimately cost them.
Still, for Dover’s men, the final match is more than just a formality, giving Guyana a chance to finish strong, to show pride, and to offer a glimpse of hope for the future of Guyanese football.
Kickoff against Montserrat promises to be emotional, as several players may be donning national colours in front of their home fans for the last time in this campaign.
Guyana now seeks to leave a lasting impression, even as their road to 2026 comes to a premature end.
