Kaieteur Sports – Back-to-back Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League champions, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Football Club, are set for another shot at regional glory after being drawn in Group B of the 2024 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield, scheduled for July 26 to August 3 in Trinidad and Tobago.
The Camp Ayangana outfit returns to the prestigious regional tournament for the second consecutive year, having once again proven their dominance on the domestic front by claiming the GFF Elite League title.
The CFU Club Shield serves as the gateway to the Caribbean Club Championship, which in turn provides a pathway to the Concacaf Champions Cup, the region’s most elite club competition.
For GDF, this year’s tournament provides a chance of redemption on the international stage and prove that they can compete among the Caribbean’s best.
Drawn into a highly competitive Group B, GDF will face off against Dominica’s Moca FC, St Paul’s United Strikers from St Kitts and Nevis, Paradise FC International of Grenada, Aruba’s SV Britannia, and French Guiana’s AS Etoile Matoury.
Head Coach Joseph ‘Bill’ Wilson will be looking to marshal his troops with discipline and intent, as the club aims to put last year’s disappointment behind them.
In 2024, GDF’s campaign ended abruptly in the preliminary round following a crushing 2-6 defeat at the hands of Antigua and Barbuda’s Grenades FC; a side that went on to reach the finals before falling to Jamaica’s Arnett Gardens FC.
With experience now under their belt and a more battle-hardened squad, the soldiers will be aiming to march further into the tournament this time around.
