GAWU saddened on the passing of Mr. James Singh

Kaieteur News – The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) expresses its profound sadness at the passing of Mr. James Singh, former Commissioner of Forests and long-standing leader within the forestry sector of Guyana.

Mr. Singh was a respected figure in public service whose tenure at the helm of the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) was marked by his steadfast commitment to the stewardship of Guyana’s forestry resources. His dedication to sustainable forestry management, environmental preservation, and national development has left an indelible mark on the sector and the country at large.

As the recognised bargaining agent for the workers of the GFC, GAWU had the privilege of working closely with Mr. Singh over the years. Our engagements with him were always characterised by professionalism, mutual respect, and a shared concern for the well-being of workers. Mr. Singh demonstrated a genuine willingness to engage in dialogue, to seek compromise, and to find solutions in the interest of advancing staff welfare and improving working conditions.

He maintained an open-door policy and was always approachable, thoughtful, and constructive in his dealings with the Union. His understanding of the role of labour and his cooperative demeanour contributed significantly to fostering a stable and respectful industrial relations climate within the Commission. Mr. Singh’s leadership was evident in his interactions with staff and their representatives and in his stewardship of the GFC. He championed initiatives that sought to protect Guyana’s rich forest resources while balancing economic development with environmental sustainability. His efforts earned him national recognition, and his legacy will undoubtedly influence the forestry landscape for years.

On behalf of the Executive and membership of GAWU, we extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Singh’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. His passing is a great loss to Guyana, and his memory will live on through the many lives he touched and the contributions he made to the forestry sector.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
