Kaieteur News – China has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening ties with Guyana through its global Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), with Beijing’s top diplomat in Guyana declaring that China stands ready to help drive Guyana’s modernisation and economic transformation.
The call was made by Chinese Ambassador Yang Yang during a reception hosted on June 5 to commemorate the 53rd Anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Guyana.
In her address Ambassador Yang underscored China’s commitment to Guyana as a strategic partner in the Caribbean and Latin America. She described the bilateral relationship as one marked by mutual respect and development synergy, and called for Guyana to remain actively engaged in the BRI framework.
“We will encourage more qualified, reputable, and capable enterprises to invest in Guyana, encourage them to actively participate in the modernisation, and encourage them to deliver greater achievements through high-quality Belt and Road cooperation,” Ambassador Yang stated.
The Belt and Road Initiative, launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, is China’s global infrastructure and development strategy aimed at enhancing regional connectivity through investments in roads, ports, energy, and other critical sectors. Guyana signed on to the BRI in 2018 and has since seen increasing Chinese investment in infrastructure and public services.
Ambassador Yang noted that China was committed to helping Guyana tap further into its development potential, particularly as the country undergoes “the largest economic and social transformation in its history.” She revealed that future cooperation would not be limited to traditional sectors like energy, mining, infrastructure, and agriculture.
“We are also willing to work with Guyana to tap deeper into cooperation potential, and to expand our collaboration from traditional areas such as energy, mining, infrastructure, and agriculture to emerging fields like the digital economy, green development, and artificial intelligence,” she added.
China’s footprint in Guyana has expanded significantly in recent years. In 2024, bilateral trade reached US$1.4 billion nearly four times higher than in 2019. Direct Chinese investment in Guyana also skyrocketed from US$256 million in 2019 to US$10.6 billion last year, driven by major infrastructure projects such as the New Demerara River Bridge and regional hospital upgrades.
Ambassador Yang described the cooperation between China and Guyana as “hot,” referring not only to the warm reception she has received since her arrival over 50 days ago but also to the intensity of collaboration across various sectors.
“In the past fifty days, I experienced the hot hospitality from the Guyanese government and the people, the scorching hot weather, and hotness of cooperation between China and Guyana across various sectors,” she said. Ambassador Yang said, “China has and will continue to treat Guyana as good friend, good partner, and good brother and sister. So, let us work together to shape an even brighter future for our bilateral relations.”
