Kaieteur News- A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) have announced their decision to coalesce for the upcoming General and Regional Elections, expressing confidence in winning, once elections are free and fair.
In a statement to the media, the parties said that they are, “aware that GECOM is a compromised institution that is not intent on delivering free and fair elections and we are preparing to confront the illegalities. GECOM must know we share the views of our Commissioners and that GECOM’s failure to deliver free and fair elections has serious negative consequences.”
Recommending that good sense prevails, the coalition clearly stated that its decision must in no way be seen as an indication that the parties therein are comfortable with GECOM’s “mismanagement of the election process”.
The group accused the commission of failing to live up to its constitutional mandate of delivering an election that is of the highest standard of integrity and fairness, to win the confidence of the citizens.
“GECOM will be responsible if the people of Guyana lose confidence in the elections. Accordingly, we denounce the unilateral, illegitimate, and reckless matter if which the GECOM Chair communicated with the President on setting an election date without involving the six commissioners. Is there any iota of decency and principle left in the GECOM Chairwoman? The country must hold her directly responsible for GECOM’s failures,” the statement said.
Further, the group stated that its decision to participate in this year’s elections does not ignore the fact that over the last few years GECOM has continuously refused to meet the demands for a clean voters’ list, as well as implement the use of fingerprint biometrics at the polls.
“As such, these elections remain highly vulnerable to manipulation and fraud. The safeguards to ensure integrity can be readily breached, as we have already seen during the registration process where persons can register without adequate proof of identity, country of birth, and address. What then informed our decision?” the statement said.
The coalesced parties stated that they cannot boycott the elections and allow the current administration to regain control of the entire political space noting that the damage would be irreversible.
Secondly, the group said that it would be irresponsible to deny citizens the opportunity to express their support for the coalition. “The vast majority of Guyanese are determined to get rid of the PPP and we must afford them the option to do so by putting the APNU/WPA coalition’s name on the ballot,” the statement said.
Thirdly, the coalition said it is confident of winning the polls at a free and fair election notwithstanding the huge challenge of “thwarting the PPP from exploiting the various flaws in the electoral system to its advantage.”
“To this end, we will expend all efforts to reduce these risks. We call on all fair-minded Guyanese to likewise be alert and stand guard to protect the integrity of the elections by publicly exposing and reporting on acts of fraud by the PPP,” the coalition urged.
The APNU/WPA admitted that while the election will be held under conditions that are far from ideal and prone to manipulation by the PPP, they believe that the will of the people will prevail to have the current administration removed from office.
