Independence Three-Stage Cycling Road Race…
Kaieteur Sports- In a thrilling display of resilience and national pride, the prestigious National Independence Three-Stage Cycling Road Race concluded as a massive success over last weekend, thanks to the timely intervention of the Ministry of Sports after controversies threatened to derail the event.
With an excess of $3 million injected at the eleventh hour, the government ensured the smooth execution of the race, which saw a dominant performance by a Colombian rider Mateo Garica representing Trinidad Raiders, while local cyclists put up a spirited fight with excellent performances from Robin Persaud and Alex Newton.
Just days before the event, logistical and financial challenges loomed large, casting doubt on whether the race, a staple of Guyana’s Independence celebrations would proceed. However, Minister of Sports Charles Ramson Jr. and Director of Sports Steve Ninvalle stepped in, securing the necessary funding and resources to guarantee the event’s staging.
“This race is more than just competition; it’s a symbol of our sporting heritage,” said Minister Ramson. “Despite the hurdles, we were determined to deliver for our athletes and fans.”
On the day, the international field was fierce, with Garcia pushing the pedals to the limit; sweeping all three stages across the two-day event, showcasing elite endurance and tactical brilliance. While local riders couldn’t secure the coveted elite first place spot, Christopher Griffith of the KFC Evolution displayed optimal endurance to secure third behind the Raiders duo, the local showing deserves considerable amount of praises, to support this; several young Guyanese cyclists demonstrating significant improvement against regional competitors.
The Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) extended heartfelt thanks to the Ministry of Sports, the National Sports Commission, and the Commissioner and respective Commanders of the Guyana Police Force for ensuring security and traffic management. Special recognition was also given to the hospitalble service from the Taj Hotel and Church View International for accommodating teams and the IT analysts who streamlined live tracking and results, Munchies Restaurant National motor racer Kevin Jeffrey and family and everyone that made this event a success.
“Without the government’s support, this event wouldn’t have happened,” said a federation spokesperson. “We’re already looking ahead to next year, aiming for even greater local success.”
With the 2025 edition now in the books, the cycling community is optimistic about the future, hopeful that continued investment will propel Guyanese riders to the podium in years to come.
