Kaieteur News– Heavy rains have caused massive flooding at Waterfront and Lamp Island, Kwakwani, Region Ten.
The floods have halted ongoing roadworks in the area and affected at least some 20 homes.
Kaieteur News understands that the Kwakwani Disaster Preparedness Committee – a committee set up by the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) is monitoring the situation.
It is unclear the number of residents affected by the flood.
Last year, flood waters almost covered houses in the area and residents had to be evacuated. The situation this year has not escalated to that point but residents say the water is rising quickly.
Residents told Kaieteur News that evacuation would normally begin when the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) travels to the location to conduct assessments and setup shelters.
Up to press-time, residents said there was no sign of the CDC in the area.
Meanwhile, residents fear that the flood waters will continue to rise severely affecting those who occupy Lamp Island.
One Resident, Jocelyn, who has been living at Kwakwani for many years, in a Facebook post said, “According to the Map of Guyana, the areas occupied by residents along the banks of the river are swamp lands.”
The man said that when the CDC visited Kwakwani in the 1990s under the leadership of Major General (Retd) Joseph Singh to assess flooding in the community he told residents that they are living in a swamp area and they need to relocate.
“One resident responded, we like it here,” he recalled while adding that Singh had responded, “If you must live here, I recommend you build your house on a raft since the flooding will get worse.
He noted too that bauxite operations were previously located at the “Old Plant Site Area” in Kwakwani because of massive flooding.

Dear Sir, Let it be noted with all seriousness that Jocelyn should not be the mouth piece for the residents of Kwakwani Water Front areas. Kaieteur News should have engaged directly with residents of the Waterfront area especially to simply understand what causes us not to move to higher ground. Land grabbing is rampant in Kwakwani and the NDC encourages it. Many times when we decides to choose a spot to clean and rebuild only to be told that it belongs to someone already. Friends and families of the NDC gets the best spots and even more than one. And so we got fedup. So let Jocelyn shut up. He was one of the former leaders of the NDC in Kwakwani under the former government and they do nothing to brighten up or develop Kwakwani. Two months ago the minister of housing was here and we were able to apply for house lots which the present government is building a housing scheme about two miles from the Jeep Landing onthe road to Ituni. We are eagerly awaiting the completion so we can move. Thank you.
JOCELYN aka should not be the mouth piece of the residences of Kwakwani Water Front . He is an ” empty drum”
