─ demands its removal
Kaieteur News- The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has issued a stern warning to local artiste, ‘Baby Skello,’ demanding the removal of a recent song that portrays the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi in a vulgar, sexually explicit, and blasphemous manner.
The commission is also exploring legal action under the laws of Guyana.
In a statement released on Friday, the ERC said it “strongly condemns” the song, describing it as deeply offensive to the Hindu community.
“This content constitutes a deeply offensive act that strikes at the heart of the Hindu community’s religious beliefs and is wholly unacceptable in a society that values mutual respect and coexistence,” the ERC stated.
While reaffirming its support for freedom of expression, the commission emphasised that such freedoms must be exercised with respect for all religious and cultural traditions in Guyana.
“…Any content that mocks, insults, or degrades sacred religious figures, undermines social harmony and offends the values of decency and tolerance that Guyanese society upholds,” the statement continued.
As part of its official response, the ERC has formally requested that Baby Skello remove the song from all digital platforms and halt any public dissemination.
“The commission views this action as a necessary step forward in mitigating further harm and signaling that such expressions have no place in our plural society,” the ERC said.
The commission also confirmed that it is actively pursuing legal avenues in response to the incident. “Discussions are underway with the relevant authorities to determine appropriate legal action and ensure accountability,” it stated.
Additionally, the ERC plans to engage with stakeholders including artistes, producers, and media platforms to promote greater awareness of religious respect. “Educational campaigns will be launched to reinforce those values, especially among younger audiences and content creators,” the commission added.
