Kaieteur News- A 38-year-old man was shot in his right eye with a rubber bullet on Tuesday night by a member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) who was pursuing two other suspects at One Mile Wismar, Linden Region Ten.
The injured man has been identified as Shirlon Hollingsworth, a resident of One Mile Wismar, Linden. The incident reportedly occurred between 22:00h and 23:00h. Region Ten Commander and Assistant Commissioner Kurleigh Simon told this publication that on Tuesday, between 17:00h and 00:00h, police were dispatched to a location in Linden where persons were blocking the road, burning debris and throwing missiles at police, as ranks cleared the streets. “Rubber pellets were used to disperse them,” Simon said.
However, in an interview with Kaieteur News, the victim’s wife, 35-year-old Nikkisha Hollingsworth, clarified that she and her husband live in a shared compound where two separate houses are located, one at the front and the other at the back. She explained that her husband had stepped outside to lock up their shop, which is located in their yard, and to check on their vehicle. During a live on her Facebook page, the injured man recounted, “When I lock the shop, I hear some lil boys running by the street and the police was shooting, anyway I finish off locking the shop.”
Afterwards, Hollingsworth rushed to the front house on the property where his brother lives. However, upon reaching inside, he said, “Soon as I turn around fuh push in the door… the police was right at the door by the fence, aimed his gun straight in me yard straight to my face, and shoot.” The rank reportedly fired five more shots and then left the scene.
Hollingsworth was then rushed to the McKenzie Hospital for treatment before being transferred to the Georgetown Hospital Public. The victim was scheduled to undergo surgery at the hospital, however, doctors were unable to operate because the rubber pellet was too deep. The man’s wife stressed, “Whatever the police used, was actually bigger than a pellet, the doctor said its bigger than a pellet, I don’t know is what they used and as such whatever it is it actually went deep and they cannot perform the surgery, so they want us to wait two weeks … before that is fixed.”
Meanwhile, during a joint news conference by a number of political parties, Lindener and social activist Nigel London raised concerns about the manner in which the police had been enforcing the law. “I don’t want to be in anyway insensitive but it seems to me like members of the Guyana Police Force are given an order to shoot in the eye, because another Lindener was shot in his eye, while he was in an apartment seeking to evade the policemen gunshots, reckless gunshots.” He continued, “We are here to demand that the officer be made known, his identity to be made known and there should be justice as well.”
