Linden All Stars face Guyballers in grudge encounter
Kaieteur Sports- On a night set side to honour ten persons who have made significant contributions to better the playing of basketball in Linden, the Guyballers Inc out of New York has padded the special occasion with two supporting basketball matches, one featuring their outfit against a representative Linden side set for tonight at the Retrieve Hard Court in the mining town of Linden.
The Guyballers through the Retrieve Raiders Basketball Club and sanctioned by the governing Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) will show their appreciation for the efforts made by these individuals who dedicated their time, energy and resources towards the promotion of basketball in the bauxite community over the years.
Former president of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Nigel Hinds is one such whose efforts are being recognised. Two outstanding former female nationals in Nichola Jacobs and Shana Chester, who now is a vice president of LABA, are also being given recognition.
Past national player and coach, Abdulla ‘Zico’ Hamid, who also has the Abdulla Hamid Basketball Foundation, coach and former Amelia’s Ward Jets standout Kevin ‘Two Feet’ Joseph, Dennis Niles of Kidrock Basketball Foundation, former LABA Treasurer and present Manager of the Retrieve Raiders Basketball Club Eusi Francis, veteran sports journalist and past secretary of the LABA Joseph Chapman, outstanding former coach of Victory Valley Royals Basketball Club Christopher ‘Labba’ Pollydore and former FIBA recognised referee Sherwin Henry are all being given just awards.
The school game will see the future generation of kids being on display, and there will be lots of giveaways for the youths and spectators.
The grudge match at 8.30pm will bring its own attraction knowing that the Dwayne ‘Brown Sugar’ Roberts led Guyballlers are looking to walk away victorious against this Linden All Star side captained by Yannick Tappin.
The Master of Ceremonies is former President of the LABA Lawrence Simon and among those who will be in attendance is President of the LABA Ms. Dawn McCsmmon Barker and the first game between the two school teams, East versus West, bounces off at 6.30pm; when all the invited guests are expected to be seated.
The second game between Guyballers All Stars and the Linden All Stars is set for 8.30pm.
In an invited comment, Guyballers Assistant Secretary Dwayne Roberts remarked: “The honouring will be blended into the games and the breaks per intermission. The objective of this night is to present our commitment to the continual development of basketball in Linden and Guyana through this nonprofit organisation. Our desires are to provide help where we can with the scarce resources available to us.”
Admission for tonight’s event is free.
