Kaieteur News- Two hundred single-mother-led households in East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six) will soon receive government support to establish small agricultural businesses.
The initiative was announced by President Irfaan Ali on Sunday during an engagement with residents at the University of Guyana, Tain Campus.
President Ali revealed that the selected women will be able to launch their agri-tech businesses within three months, with assistance from the government and key agricultural agencies such as Guyana Livestock and Development Authority (GLDA), led by Dr. Dwight Waldron and National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), led by Jagnarine Singh.
“One of the things that we want to do within this NDC (Neighbourhood Democratic Council) is to have a project that will be led by this team, particularly Dr. Waldron and Mr. Jagnarine. We want to find 200 single mother-led households, and we are going to work with you on building out shared houses, help some of you to develop small businesses to produce eggs to sell in the market. Maybe some of you who are in close proximity to areas in which you have enough grass and feed for animals—we want to give you cows so that you can produce milk for the local market. Some of you who want to go into swine production—we are going to assist you with that. And the bees, of course. Honey production,” President Ali said.
President Ali emphasised that the women will also receive proper training and safety equipment to support their ventures. “Two hundred such families we want to target in these communities. So within three months, we can have these businesses established so that we can continue this journey of empowering people, of creating opportunities, and growing our economy,” he explained.
According to the President, the initiative is in response to growing interest from women seeking to enter the agri-tech sector. He stressed that this approach will enable persons to add to their disposable income and generate more economic activity in the region. “We want every single person in this country to aspire to do better for their family, and we must find the mechanism to support them doing better for their family,” President Ali stated.
