Kaieteur News- An 18-year-old man was fined on Thursday, when he appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on charges of dangerous driving and driving without a licence.
He was arraigned before Senior Magistrate, Sunil Scarce. Eon Williams of Coldingen East Coast Demerara (ECD), was advised by his attorney to plead not guilty to dangerous driving charge and guilty to the unlicensed driving charge. However, Williams pleaded guilty to both charges.
The prosecution told the court that on March 27, 2025 along the Buxton Pubic Road at approximately 08:00hrs, the defendant was riding motorcycle bearing registration number CN 809 proceeding east. While along the said public road, Williams was overtaking several vehicles, when he collided with pedestrian Gregory Browne who was crossing the road north to south after being given the permission from vehicles that were on both sides of the road. As a result of the collision, Browne and Williams fell onto the surface of the road and they both suffered injuries about their bodies.
An investigation was conducted and the defendant was not a holder of a valid driver’s licence, he was then made aware of the offence and was later charged. Williams’ attorney pleaded with the court for him to not be jailed, citing his client’s age, and that he would have sustained injuries as well and learnt his lesson for being an unlicensed driver.
Browne told the court that he sustained injuries about his body. He added that he approached the defendant’s father seeking compensation, however due to an unpleasant encounter, he will be suing the teenager in the High Court for the injuries he sustained as well as medical bills which he is left to face. Williams was fined $25,000 for the unlicensed driving and was fined $50,000 for dangerous driving charge. The magistrate added that failure to pay the fine will result in five weeks imprisonment.
