Kaieteur News- Dem boys seh de last time Guyana export lil fish and fruits to America, de customs man smile and seh, “Welcome, come again.”
Now, since oil start flowin’ America tun grumpy and slap on a 38% tariff. Yes, y’all read right—thirty-eight percent!
Dem boys seh had we been poor and still hustling wid rice, sugar and mango, we woulda only get a 10% knock. Before oil, it was a nice lil 2.7% and everybody happy. But no, Guyana go find oil, and not just any oil—ExxonMobil oil. Now de same America wha does tek we oil like is free water from de pipe, deh punishing we for exporting lil pine, plantain and pepper sauce.
If that ain’t irony, dem boys don’t know wah is.
You see, before de oil, Guyana did in trade deficit wid Uncle Sam. We were buying more dan we selling. But now, ExxonMobil pumping we oil and shipping it straight to dem. So suddenly, we lookin’ like we making money off America—even though we own take-home is like $3 and a bottle of water.
So wah Trump administration do? Whack we wid 38%! Not because we tek but because we give.
Dem boys seh dis ain’t liberation, dis a declaration of war—a trade war!
And guess who suffering? Not Exxon. Is de lil man in Queens and Brooklyn wah does wait whole week fuh de box of gilbaka, bora, and golden apple fuh reach dem West Indian stores. De new price gon mek dem start eatin’ canned tuna and imported grapes from Mars.
Dem boys seh we leaders need backbone. Not de type you get from goat soup, but real backbone. Stop singing de chorus: “America has a right to its policies.”
When Canada get vex wid de Trump tariffs, dem boycott American goods and nuff Canadians cancel dem summer travel plans to Uncle Sam. One mayor order all American liquor off de shelves.
Dat is de spirit we need here in Guyana. If Uncle Sam tekking bread out we mouth; we must not buy dem goods.
People talking about national consultation and engagement… Yuh don’t engage with bullies. The time fuh talk pass. America did not talk to we when dem lash we with dat 38%. What we need is to start boycotting American goods and cancelling travel plans fuh de summer!
Talk half. Leff half.
