Kaieteur News- The Ministry of Public Works, through the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), will be spending approximately $211,972,300 to dock and rehabilitate several of its vessels.
This is according to an invitation for bids issued by the Ministry, which states that bids are expected to open on April 17, 2025 at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office.
According to the ministry, the vessels slated for docking and rehabilitation are: M.L. Thompson for an estimated cost of $17,000,000, M.L. David P for $9,000,000, P.B Arapaima for $8,800,000, M.D. Steve-N for $151,272,300, M.T. Setter for $15,000,000 and M.T. Aruka for $10,900,000.
This publication understands that P.B Arapaima was one of the newest vessels added to MARAD’s fleet. The $535M pilot vessel, which was commissioned in 2023, was custom-built for MARAD by Ocea Shipbuilding Limited in France.
It was reported in the media that these vessels undergo general maintenance so as to ensure safe use on the country’s waterways. With a sum of $9.3 billion expended last year on river transport facilities, it was announced that this year, an allocation of $9.9 billion is budgeted to improve the country’s river transportation service.
