Kaieteur News- The government through the Guyana Water Inc. (GWI), an agency under the Ministry of Housing and Water, is preparing to utilize a US$76 million loan from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) to drill potable water wells in Regions Two, Three, Five and Six.
This is according to an advertisement issued by the agency seeking contractors to undertake the works.
The document states that the Guyana Government has applied for financing from the CDB in an amount equivalent to US$76,249,000 towards the cost of the ‘Water Supply Improvement Project’ and intends to apply a portion of the loan to the project which is divided into two lots.
Lot 1 of the project entails the construction of potable water wells at Maria’s Delight in Region Two, and Leguan in Region Three. Lot 2 entails the construction of water wells at Bath in Region Five and at Adventure in Region Six.
“The works include but not limited to the following: The construction of six potable water wells along the coast – three with an average depth of 183 meters for Lot 1 and three wells with an average depth of 366 meters for Lot 2,” the document informed.
It should be noted that the GWI is the executing agency for the project and the ministry is responsible for the overall implementation of the project. The loan was approved in 2023.
The CDB at that time in a statement said that the initiative is one of the first to be carried out under CDB’s Guyana Country Engagement Strategy (2023-2025). The project will support the Government of Guyana’s efforts to increase the percentage of persons having access to treated water to 90% by 2025. At present, although 96% of the population has access to potable water only 53% of the supply meets the aesthetic standard of the World Health Organisation due to the high iron content, the CDB disclosed.
Additionally, the Bank said that the loan will serve five coastal communities.
The Bank stated that the infrastructure development initiative involves the construction of five water treatment plants, complete with storage tanks, and the installation of transmission mains and water meters to vastly improve the quality and reliability of the water supply to the communities. Nearly 15,000 households in these communities will benefit from the interventions, CDB added.
Kaieteur News had reported that under this loan, the ministry signed contracts for the construction of water treatment plants for the communities identified for the water wells project.
