Kaieteur News- President Irfaan Ali upbraided contractors over the delays in completing access roads on the eastern side of the new Demerara River Bridge during an impromptu pre-dawn visit on Tuesday.
During a visit to the project sites, which was broadcast, live via his official Facebook page on Tuesday, the Head-of-State could be heard scolding contractors about their lax approach to the work.
He also scolded the contractors for failing to implement a 24-hour work schedule to ensure that work is completed according to agreed timelines.
“It is y’all attitude and y’all work ethic is what will get this project completed in time…Look I told y’all I would be here and look at the…What happen to the 24-hour shift system that was supposed to be in place?” the President remarked as he warned that there will be no extensions for the projects.
The Head-of-State was adamant that all contracts located along the access road to the new Demerara River Bridge must be completed within the scheduled work programme.
Meanwhile, President Ali during his impromptu visit also inspected work on the new four-lane high-span Demerara River Bridge where he expressed optimism that it will be completed by its August 31, 2025 deadline.
The bridge is now 61.72% completed, and is one of several major projects expected to be completed in Guyana this year. The new bridge will be instrumental in supporting the oil and gas sector, as many companies have facilities on the West Bank and West Coast of Demerara, including the Gas-to-Energy project.
According to the Department of Public Information (DPI), the government announced plans to develop a highway from the new Demerara River Bridge connecting Wales, Bartica, and ultimately Timehri on the East Bank of Demerara to propel infrastructure and economic growth. President Ali made the announcement at the commissioning of the state-of-the-art $1.35 billion Wales Water Treatment Plant on Sunday.
This single infrastructure project will open up tens of thousands of acres of land for farming activities and new housing schemes, creating new opportunities for residents there.
The Parika port facility is an additional project that will allow farmers to export their produce directly to the Caribbean and further afield.
President Ali stated that a second power plant will be developed to propel Region Three into a modern industrial manufacturing hub. This, he said, will create thousands of jobs by creating new industries within the region.
The US$260 million new Demerara River Bridge, which will connect Regions Three and Four, will support all these developments.
