Kaieteur Sports- The future of Guyanese boxing was on full display as young fighters showcased their talent and determination at the latest edition of the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) Pepsi Michael Parris U16 Championship.
Held at the Andrew “Sixhead” Lewis Gym and backed by Pepsi, the tournament provided a platform for the country’s aspiring boxers to hone their skills and gain competitive experience. Among the standout performers was Jofes Jackson of the New Amsterdam Boxing Gym, who claimed the prestigious Best Boxer award after a dominant showing in the 73-76kg category. Jackson’s commanding performance against Chaka Stephens led to a referee stoppage, underscoring his potential as a future star in the sport.
The event kicked off with an explosive bout between Jaden Fileen of the Vergenoegen Boxing Gym and Jaden Lewis, setting the tone for an action-packed evening. Fileen’s relentless pressure forced the referee to step in, signaling his readiness for tougher competition ahead.
Other bouts saw impressive performances, including Stephen Haymer’s victory over Antonio Stephens, while the 57kg match-up between Randy Boodhoo and Zaheed Giddings was called off. Curtis McDonald battled to a hard-fought split decision win against Lennox Lawrence, while Josh Chester’s 46kg bout with Jireh Mannie also ended in abandonment.
At the end of the fiercely contested championship, the Andrew Lewis Gym and New Amsterdam Boxing Gym shared the title of Best Gym, reflecting the depth of young talent emerging from both camps.
GBA President Steve Ninvalle praised the success of the tournament, reaffirming its role in developing the nation’s future boxing champions. “This championship is a critical stepping stone for our young athletes. We are committed to increasing competitive opportunities and surpassing last year’s milestone of 16 tournaments,” Ninvalle stated.
The Michael Parris U16 Championship not only provides a crucial platform for these young fighters but also honors the legacy of Michael Parris, Guyana’s only Olympic medalist. As Guyana continues to nurture its boxing talent, events like these serve as vital proving grounds for the next generation of champions, keeping the country’s boxing dreams alive on the international stage.
