…Credits production team for success
Kaieteur News- Police prosecutor, Sergeant Quincy Lacon is crediting his team at Joey2Kool production for helping him create history in Guyana by becoming the first policeman to win the coveted Calypso Monarch competition.

Lacon, also known by his stage name, ‘Ego’, dethroned seasoned competitor OKC, last month, to etch his name in the history books and win his first ever calypso title with his song “Trade Guyana”, written by Joel Brown and Gospel Singer, Faith Corrica.
“I am proud as a police sergeant to be the first Calypso Monarch for the Force,” Lacon said, while noting that his involvement in the competition and music, forms part of the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) 2022- 2026 strategic plan.
“…Which is partnership, which is bridging the gap in terms of contemporary policing,” the 2025 Calypso king explained.
He added, “Why I am saying that is because my Calypso presentations have always managed to gravitate to the public and I always speak to them through the lyrics.”
Lacon has always been a part of the Force’s entertainment set-up, dating back to when he was a constable. He branched out into the Calypso competition and has been consistent, finishing amongst the top four each year.
This year, however, he crossed that hurdle to become the number one calypsonian in the country, making the Police Force and his family proud.
Lacon credits his success to Joel Brown and his production team at Joey2Kool Production. He began working with the music company in the latter part of 2024.
“Working with Joey2Kool from then to now has turned my entire career around,” he told Kaieteur News as he recounted balancing his job in the courtroom with rigorous rehearsals and wardrobe changes for the competition.
“I had a team that pushed me to win this competition,” he said.
The Calypso, “Trade Guyana”, was inspired by an issue that could have seen Lacon not taking part in this year’s competition. It was reportedly written and produced under a tight schedule to meet the deadline for submission and ended up being the production that not only went viral in the country but elevated the policeman and his team to Calypso supremacy in 2025.
Apart from his team’s support, Lacon also worked hard and recalled being motivated to push himself for the top spot, following a meeting last year with the Minister of Culture Youth and Sport and a Guyanese artiste.
The Minister had reportedly advised that all artistes return to the drawing board.
Lacon said he did just that and even analyzed his competitors and brain stormed creative ideas.
The effort he made had paid off and his production team helped create a different style of Calypso that captivated Guyanese both young and old.
His success has motivated him to bring some life back to calypso, a genre he believes is slowly dying.
In next Sunday’s edition of Kaieteur News, Lacon will share how he balances the courtroom with the stage to be a voice of the people. Stay tuned for part two.
