Kaieteur News- According to Chinese lunisolar calendar the Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is a festival that marks the beginning of a new year. It’s a time to celebrate the end of winter and the start of spring. To mark the auspicious occasion, the Chinese Embassy in Georgetown held its 2025 Spring Festival reception at its Georgetown Headquarters on Friday.
The reception was full of joy and harmony. The guests enjoyed wonderful performances, delicious traditional Chinese snacks and charming Chinese traditional culture activities.
Chargé d’Affaires Huang Rui delivered remarks while President of Guyana Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Anthony Phillips made congratulatory video addresses. Representatives of Chinese communities, enterprises, organizations in Guyana and friends from all sectors of Guyana attended the event.
Chargé d’Affaires Huang Rui extended Chinese New Year greetings to all and pointed out that, under the strong leadership of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, Chinese modernization and Major-Country Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics have made historical achievements in 2024.
Speaking to the guests, Mr. Huang Rui noted in 2024, the bilateral ties between China and Guyana were even closer, more stable and fruitful.
“We supported each other politically, cooperated closely economically, and enriched each other culturally. We shared opportunities, faced challenges, discussed cooperation and promoted development. China and Guyana have become good friends trusted and relied on each other. Today we invited many Guyanese friends who have studied or been trained in China,” the Chargé d’Affaires said.

Teachers and volunteers of the Confucius Institute dedicated selflessly to advancing cultural exchanges. The Chinese communities devoted tirelessly to Chinese citizens and promoting China-Guyana serving friendship. You are witnesses, participators and contributors”

He explained the significance and symbolism of the occasion. According to the Chargé d’Affaires 2025 represents the year of the snake which is symbolic for smoothness, strength and vitality.
“The year of the dragon is slipping away, and the year of the snake is quietly approaching. The lunar New Year or Spring Festival has not only been the Chinese traditional holiday but also became an international one. Inspired by the Global Civilization Initiative introduced by President Xi Jinping, Spring Festival has been officially listed as a United Nations floating holiday in its calendar of conferences and meetings as from 2024.”
“Also in 2024, Spring Festival and social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of the traditional New Year was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.”
