Kaieteur News- A 21-year-old handyman employed at Distribution Services Limited (DSL) Cash and Carry in Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was spared a larceny charge after allegedly stealing a colleague’s phone.
Isaiah Barrington of 602 ‘D’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was accused of stealing an iPhone 13, valued at $285,000, from Onesha Greaves, on January 20, 2025.
Barrington appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecution objected to bail, citing Barrington’s admission to the theft and his expressed remorse. Greaves confirmed in court that the phone had been recovered by the Police.
She explained that although Barrington initially denied taking the phone, security footage showed him picking it up. After being questioned by Police, Barrington confessed and handed over the phone to investigators.
When asked by Magistrate McGusty whether she wished to proceed with the matter, Greaves declined, stating that she only wanted her phone returned. “I know he’s young, and I hope he learns from this. Everyone makes mistakes, and I hope he doesn’t make the same once again,” she said.
Barrington appeared visibly relieved by Greaves’ decision to discontinue the case and expressed gratitude for her leniency. He also apologized publicly, promising not to repeat his mistake. “I am sorry for stealing your phone, and it will never happen again,” he said.
Magistrate McGusty, while acknowledging Barrington’s youth, cautioned him about the potential consequences of his actions. “If you have sticky fingers, no one will want to employ you,” she warned, noting that even though the case was being dropped, it would remain a permanent mark on his work record.
She advised Barrington to avoid further trouble, urging him to “keep your hands to yourself” and to learn from his mistake. Ultimately, Barrington was freed, but with a stern reminder of the lasting impact of his actions.
