Kaieteur News-In the Hamilton Green Inter-Ward/Village Knockout Football Championship, Frontrunners, Bent Street, Back Circle, reigning champions Stabroek Ballers, and Den Amstel have advanced to the quarterfinals. Joining them are Pourderoyen, Stewartville, Timehri Panthers, and Road Warriors, each vying for supremacy and cash prize of up to one million dollars.
The two-day, nine-a-side knockout tournament kicked off with a flurry of goals and some no-shows, with the absence of an offside rule leading to thrilling play and some unusual scoring opportunities that kept goalkeepers on high alert. Bent Street set the pace with a massive 9-0 victory over Agricola on Friday evening at the National Training Centre in Providence.
Defending champions Stabroek Ballers made an impressive start in the 2024 edition, overpowering Timehri United 5-1. Led by Derwin George, Stabroek’s relentless strikers broke through United’s defense repeatedly, sealing a comfortable win.
Back Circle also claimed an emphatic 3-0 win against Espanyol, while Road Warriors narrowly defeated Uitvlugt 2-1. Den Amstel took down Sophia All-Stars 4-1 after an early 1-1 stalemate in the opening 10 minutes.
Meanwhile the other two winners Stewartville and Timehri Panthers have also secured quarterfinals berths via the walkover route, after a no-show by Gold is Money and Sparta Boss, respectively.
The winning team will take home $500,000, a trophy, medals, and 12 hampers sponsored by Ricks and Sari’s Enterprise. The second, third, and fourth-placed teams will earn $250,000, $150,000, and $100,000, respectively, along with individual accolades for the top goal scorer and most valuable player.
The tournament continues today, November 10, with quarterfinal and semifinals action at the same venue. Stabroek Ballers will face Stewartville in the first quarter final matchup at 6:00 pm, followed by Pourderoyen against Timehri Panthers in the second. Bent Street will then go up against Den Amstel, with Back Circle clashing with Road Warriors in the final quarterfinal match of the evening.
The quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinals, with the tournament set to crown its champion following a third-place playoff.
Tournament coordinator Lennox Arthur requests that all teams arrive one hour early to avoid walkovers and ensure a smooth event as the 2024 champions are crowned.
