Dear Editor,
I read a letter in Stabroek News by one Roysdale Forde SC MP “VP Jagdeo’s proposal effectively undermines the very foundation of education system” (SN, 12th June 2024) in which the gentleman laments that the Democratically Elected PPP/C is considering turning to private schools to educate Guyana’s students albeit to break the ongoing strike by teachers called by GTU.
GTU is asking for 20% before any negotiation takes place on backdated multi-year pay awards which is ridiculous as the question needs to be asked as to why GTU settles for a couple of years backdated pay. Why not ask for 10 years backpay?
The question that Roysdale Forde SC MP needs to answer is which schools are excelling, private schools or dysfunctional public schools?
Everyone would like private education but not everyone wants to pay for private education. Which is fine as we can have a system whereby private schools are given grants to take on pupils who cannot afford to pay for education.
Least we forget, some people do pay for extra tuition for their children.
Sincerely,
Sean Ori
