Waterfalls Magazine – For 87 year old Yvonne Coats her everyday routine for the past few decades consisted of living in a dilapidated house at Second Street Agricola, where she slept in a chair and lived in mud and water. Though there was a roof over the pensioner’s head she was still constantly exposed to the elements.
The situation was brought to the attention of the Broomes Foundation which was founded by Former Minister Simons Broomes.
The former Minister set out to change the elderly woman’s life in time for the Christmas holidays. With the help of several persons, her children and the community at large she was able to solicit the necessary materials as well as the manpower to have the home constructed and fully furnished.
The single flat concrete structure has an open floor concept which given her age is perfect for the pensioner to have everything at her fingertips. The painted and fully furnished home, with a bed, a three piece chair set, a television for entertainment, a fully functioning kitchen complete with sink and even a stove.
The emotional Coats said that “I have to thank God and Miss Broomes from the bottom of my heart. This is something that happened suddenly and why me? But Ms. Broomes has come to me and I didn’t believe it because it never happened yet. She takes me shopping and she never left me until this.”
She looked around her new home and broke down in tears since she was in disbelief that it was all hers and in time for the holidays. After composing she said all that was done from her it started small and blossomed into something that she never believed could have happened. Her only child died several years ago and Ms. Broomes had stepped in to take up the mantle.
The former Minister explained that she met the elderly woman in 2020 shortly before she exited office and she has been supporting her ever since. Since then for Christmas and Mother’s Day she would always take her shopping.
“I want to thank you and Pastor Rolling and the general public, and I want to even thank the media for being here. It’s not about me; it’s about him who sent me.” She noted that after taking a look around the place where the pensioner formerly lived she decided to do something about it and the initiative to give Ms. Coats a new home was born. However in order to fulfill the promise and get her out of the current place as soon as possible she had to first build her a temporary home to give her some relief.
Now that the woman is safe and sound in her new home, the minds of those attached to the foundation and who helped make the venture a possibility are at ease. She will be having a great Christmas as she knows she has her guardian angel with her always.
