Kaieteur Sports – Guyana hosted the 21st edition of the South American 10k Road Race Classic on Sunday last, with an outstanding showcase of talent and international participation. The event, which began at 3:00 pm, unfolded from the Police Sports Club ground, located at the corners of Barrack and Parade Streets in Eve Leary, Kingston, and spanned across the East Coast of Demerara before culminating back at Eve Leary.
However, it was Kenya’s Alex Ekesa and Trinidad’s Samantha Shukla, who showcased their exceptional running skills, outpacing their competitors to clinch the prestigious South American 10k Classic title.
The event drew an impressive turnout, featuring scores of athletes hailing from thirteen different nations. Among the international participants, over 25 athletes represented nations outside of Guyana, bringing a diverse array of talent to the competition. Notable participating countries included athletes from Guadeloupe, St. Vincent, Grenada, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba, Martinique, Kenya, and, of course, Guyana.
The winners of the senior 10k race received substantial cash prizes as recognition for their remarkable performances. The first-place finisher secured a generous prize of US$1000, while the second and third-place finishers were rewarded with US$800 and US$600, respectively. Even the fourth-place finisher did not leave empty-handed, as they received a cash prize of US$400 in acknowledgment of their commendable efforts.
