Kaieteur News – Region Three takes the lead in road fatalities across Guyana from January to date, Police Commander of the district, Mahendra Siwnarine said during a recent interview with Radio Eve Leary.
“Sad to say we are at a 237 percent increase in terms of fatalities. For last year, we had eight fatal accidents and for this year we have had twenty seven,” Siwnarine disclosed.
While drinking and driving contributed to some of those fatalities, most of them, according to the commander, were caused by individuals not paying attention when using the roadways.
“We plea and we continue to plea on a daily basis for those road users to be more attentive when they are on the roadways, indeed most of our accidents so far within Region Three has been because of inattentiveness especially the fatal accidents,” Siwnarine said.
He explained that an analysis was done to determine the cause of accidents within his district.
He noted that the high increase in Region Three road fatalities has put a negative impact on the efforts of ranks within the division to reduce accidents throughout the region.
“We would have decreases in all the other categories that is serious minor and damage but because of that great increase in the fatalities we are currently operating at a positive point five percent in terms of all categories of accident,” Siwnarine noted.
One of the recent fatal accidents that rocked Region Three took place in August when four teenagers were killed in a car crash at Canal #2 Polder, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
Those who died were identified as Daveanand Singh, 17, of Providence, East Bank Demerara; Amiesha Jaikaran, 19, of La Grange Old Road, WBD; Divyanie Narine, 18, of Kitty, Georgetown; and Daniel Tirbeni, 19, of La Grange.
Singh was the driver of car, which bore registration PAE 5773, and the others were his passengers.
According to the police, Singh was reportedly speeding when he lost control of the car and crashed into the rear of a motor lorry, GTT 6960, before slamming into a fence. Two of the victims were killed on the spot while the others died while receiving medical attention.
Another tragic accident in the Region Three district took place earlier this year on March 6, 2023 at Greenwich Park, East Bank Essequibo ((EBE). Five persons were killed in that smash-up.
Their names were given as, Stella Parhoo of Parika, EBE , 50-year-old Vernon Prowell, of Bent Street, Wortmanville, Margaret Kennedy, 72, of Tuschen; Olga Reddy, 57, of Parika; and Elvis Charles, 40, of Ruby, EBE.
According to reports, the deceased were occupants of a minibus when a truck crashed into it along the Greenwich Park Public Road. Prowell was driving the bus at the time. Several others were injured in the crash including a young journalist, Shemar Alleyene.
Notably, road fatalities have not only increased in Region Three but across the country, including the coastland.
Statistics released by the Guyana Police Force showed that that there have been 137 road deaths at the end of August 31, 2023. Since then several people have died in accidents on the country’s roadways.
On Monday evening, two persons were killed after a truck toppled while crossing a bridge near the Iwokrama Canopy walkway junction in the Rupununi. One of the dead men was identified as Orlan King while other remains unidentified.
Reports are that the truck was heading to the Rupununi around 20:30hrs on Monday when the accident occurred. Residents of the area told this publication that the men were trapped in the vehicle after it careened into a nearby creek. Rescuers managed to retrieve the body of King. Efforts were later made to recover the porter’s body.
