Kaieteur News – A man who dealt several blows to another man resulting in him unable to speak following the assault, was on Monday remanded to prison after appearing at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of attempted murder.
It is alleged that on October 4, 2023 at North Road, Sophia, Georgetown, Cedric Smith and the victim, Lennox Barrow were in a heated argument which escalated in Smith picking up a wood which he used to hit Barrow’s head, resulting in the man collapsing.
Despite the victim falling to the ground, Smith dealt him additional blows to his head. Consequently, the injured Barrow was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and was discharged the same day. However, the victim is still unable to speak following the beating.
The accused appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates Courts, before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, where he was not required to plea to the indictable charge. Smith was represented by Attorney-at-Law, Paul Fung-a-fat, who made an application for bail.
Prosecutor Quincy Lacon, however, objected to bail on grounds of the life-threatening injuries which Barrow sustained and also on the grounds that the victim is unable to speak due to the blows he sustained to his head.
Subsequently, the court refused bail and the defendant was remanded to prison. The next scheduled court date is December 7, 2023.
