Kaieteur News – President Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Tuesday promised that his government will not marginalize Afro-Guyanese. The President was at the time delivering his Emancipation Day 2023 message.
“The greatest tribute we can pay to the struggles and sacrifices of African Guyanese is to build a free, prosperous and more inclusive nation. In this regard, I want to assure all African Guyanese that my government is wholeheartedly committed to ensuring that they will never be politically or economically marginalized,” Ali said.
Guyana celebrated Emancipation Day on Tuesday, an annual celebration to celebrate the abolishment of slavery in 1838. Africans were brought to Guyana and forced to work on sugar plantations and following the end of slavery, they contributed significantly towards the development of Guyana.
However, the main opposition A Partnership for National Unity and the Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) has said that Afro-Guyanese are being sidelined when it comes to getting contracts from the government as well as high paid jobs.
President Ali has debunked the allegations and said the statements by the opposition are aimed at creating division among the two most dominant ethnic groups in the country, East Indians and Africans.
In his Emancipation Day message, the President said he is aware of forces inside and outside of Guyana, who for selfish reasons, continue to strike division and engender fear, mistrust and suspicion.
“As I have done in the past, I want to encourage Guyanese to continue to reject these attempts and expose the agitators of disunity and fear-mongering who threaten our nation’s cohesion and progress,” the president stated.
According President Ali, “No one will be left behind” including Afro-Guyanese. “African Guyanese will share in the bounty that will flow from Guyana’s transformative development now and in the future. They, along with all others, will have a stake in national development and in the governance of our country,” the Head of State said.
