Dear Editor,
The President is asked to investigate the sudden increase in the price of sand. One week ago, a small truckload of sand was selling at $20,000-$23,000. This past week, the price has surged to between $24,000 and 30,000, a more than 20% increase.
Some truckers have upped the price of a large truckload of sand from$32,000 to $ 45,000, a more than 40 % increase. It is believed that some unscrupulous operators – including some sandpit owners and some greedy truck operators are behind the recent predatory pricing of sand.
These increases will bankrupt low-income home builders. Sand is a major input in home construction. Now with the rapid acceleration of government road works, there is likely to be even more upwards pressure on the price of sand.
I am therefore asking the President to intervene to reduce the price of sand and avoid the exploitation of poor people. No one should be paying so much for a commodity that is a natural resource in Guyana.
