– as search on for captain in another boat accident
Kaieteur News – The search for Gavin Cox, a sailor of Batavia Village, Mazaruni River ended on Sunday afternoon after his body was recovered in the vicinity of River’s View Village along the Essequibo River.
Kaieteur News had reported that 29-year-old Cox was feared dead after the boat he was driving was hit by a fiberglass boat on Thursday in the Essequibo River.
Confirming the discovery of Cox’s body, Commander of Region Seven, Dion Moore said that a post mortem examination has since been conducted and determined that the sailor drowned and suffered blunt trauma.
It was reported that Cox was the lone occupant in his boat which was hit by a fiberglass boat operated by Mark Gonsalves at around 19:45hrs on Thursday. Due to the impact of the collision, Cox was flung into the river and had disappeared.
Gonsalves had told police that he attempted to search the area for Cox but the search proved futile. Subsequent to his search, Gonsalves visited the Bartica Police Station and made a report. Immediately an investigation was launched.
Meanwhile, Terry LaCruz is missing after the boat he was driving crashed into his father’s boat along the Aruka River, Region One on Sunday.
LaCruz’s father, Percy Thomas told this publication on Monday that the accident occurred just around 21:20hrs while he was heading home with his family from church.
Thomas, who was driving his boat at the time of the accident, said that as he was traversing the river, he saw a speeding boat approaching him from the opposite direction.
The distraught man said that upon seeing this, he shone his light to alert the driver of the speeding boat of his presence on the river. But according to him, it appeared the driver did not see his boat and ended up crashing straight into his (Thomas) boat bow.
As a result of the collision, that driver of the speeding vessel was flung into the Aruka River.
Following the collision, Thomas discovered that the driver of the boat that crashed into his boat is his son, the lone occupant of the boat. At the time of the accident, Thomas said that he was transporting his wife and two daughters to their home. Luckily, they did not receive serious injuries.
A search has been launched for LaCruz.
Investigations are ongoing.
