Kaieteur Sports – Former Guyana under-19 captain Eugene LaFleur slammed an impressive, unbeaten 114 to pilot Melbourne Sports Club to an exciting 66-run win over Cricket Club of Canada in their opening match of the 2023 Canadian Commonwealth Cricket Association of Toronto 40-overs competition.
Playing last Sunday at Keele Top in North York, the left-handed batsman LaFleur cracked eight fours and a similar number of sixes as his team, the defending champion, reached a formidable 349-4 from their 40-overs.
However, middle-order batsman Ronaldo Thurton provided some entertainment for Cricket Club of Canada with an attractive, 74-ball 134 but his team fell for 283 in the 38th over.
He belted 14 fours and nine sixes and didn’t find enough support at the other end despite they threatened the target momentarily.
Pacer and skipper Powell Joe-Wayne took three wickets for 42 runs from his maximum eight overs.
Apart from LaFleur’s flamboyance, which lasted for 72 balls, Sherwin Layne contributed a vital 77 not out while Hafeez Ullah and Miguel Gordon chipped in with 61 and 53 respectively.
Melbourne Sports Club won the toss and without hesitation opted to take first knock in a glorious sunshine.
Meanwhile, the 11-team round-robin tournament was set to resume yesterday with a series of matches across the Greater Toronto Area. Cricket Club of Canada clashed with Tornto Golden Knights at Norfinch facility, while today with another set of games, Melbourne Sports Club and points-leader Apollo Sports Club will match their skills also at Keele Top.
