Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – The signs are that we have drifted and slipped into the dungeons of intolerance by the PPP Administration. Hostile to any person or group that dares to express views contrary to those of the ruling elite so that we can no longer indulge in banter, which characterises a sophisticated civilised society.
In our case, the good image of the Guyana Police Force acquired by men and women of integrity is being tarnished. This image is being tarnished by a group seemingly consumed by a belief that service and obedience to the political Party supersedes service to the people of Guyana. So, what for years was political verbal exchanges is earning the ire of certain sections of the GPF.
Recently, PNC Councillor Dexter Forte was charged for verbal abuse in circumstances where I am reliably informed where both sides were hurling words at each other. It appears that his remarks were directed to a newly anointed Saint of the Petty Prevaricating Party. But this one-sided approach by sections of the Guyana Police Force seems to be the new pattern. A big wig of the ruling elite called a female Constable on duty, a Black Monkey, and all levels of our ruling elite apparently can see nothing wrong. This was not verbal abuse.
I am reminded of the Jim Crow Days in the US when black youths were locked up and in a few cases lynched for merely looking at white women. For years, political parties enthusiasts have removed banners displayed in public places. In many instances, it was part of the game to get your Party’s Banner or colours higher than the other folks. Mind you, to the best of my knowledge seldom did any political party obtain permission from the owners of what we call lantern posts. Did the PPP seek or obtain permission from the appropriate authorities to erect those large signs, extolling the virtues of the PPP and their leaders?
So, the police arrested NDC Chairman Sheron Smith, for allegedly pulling down PPP/Civic party flags from electricity poles along Manchester Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice. I hope the police can establish ownership of these flags and why not determine Ms. Smith was trying to keep the area tidy?
So when will the ever vigilant and fully staffed Police charge those who paint pro-PPP signs and overhead water reservoirs and other places? They say different strokes for different folks. But Editor, recall how the Police Force was able to deploy forty-seven ranks and eleven mobile units, had GPL switched off the power supply as they stormed the residence of Christopher Jones, MP to recover Barber Chairs, they alleged were Government’s property. Of course, a rider is that this matter is not yet concluded.
To my beloved Guyana, – Quo Vadis.
