Persaud tops Men Recurve, Williams wins for women, Zamaluddin leads men and Deoroop heads women in Barebow

Archery Guyana’s Massy Guyana & NSC sponsored Independence Open 2023…

Kaieteur Sports – Archery Guyana’s Independence Open sponsored by Massy Guyana and the National Sports Commission got underway last Saturday 27 and concluded Sunday 28, May at the Muslim Youth Organisation. The enthusiastic archers enjoyed the friendly competition and camaraderie and shot to the best of their abilities, some of whom bettered their ranking scores over previous competitions.

The Ranking Rounds were shot on Saturday beginning with the men & women Barebow Division. Coming out on top of the men’ rankings, out of a possible 720 points was Jeewanram Persaud with 633, followed by Muhammad Zamaluddin – 595, Afzal Karim – 495, Sean Duncan – 461, Jaza Percival – 370, Courtlee Rodrigues – 276 and Richard Dookie – 233.

In the women’s Ranking rounds, Julie-Ann Williams topped off with 367, followed by Theresa Deoroop’s 360, Karin Toppin’s 264, Bibi Saleema Salim’s 240 and Stephanie McTurk’s 93.

Following the Barebow event was the Recurve Ranking Rounds. In the Men’s category, Jeewanram Persaud again came out on top with 611 points, as Sean Duncan followed up with 538 and Saeed Karim with a close 535, Robert Singh shot 507 and Jaza Percival 449.

Only 3 women shot for recurve ranking; Julie-Ann Williams who topped with 426 points, followed by Theresa Deoroop with 418, and Bibi Saleema Salim with 387.

The eliminations and finals were shot off on Sunday which made for exciting match-play. Trophies were awarded from first to fifth place.

In the Men’s Barebow Division, Muhammad Zamaluddin surprised everyone by gaining 1^st position over Jeewanram Persaud who had to settle for 2^nd, while 3^rd place went to Afzal Karim, 4^th place to Jaza Percival, and 5^th place to Sean Duncan.

The women also saw excitement as Theresa Deoroop took 1^st place over Julie-Ann Williams’ 2^nd, while Bibi Saleema Salim placed 3^rd, Karin Toppin 4^th and Stephanie McTurk 5^th.

In the Men’s Recurve Division, Jeewanram Persaud took 1^st place followed by Sean Duncan in 2^nd, Robert Singh 3^rd, Saeed Karim 4^th and Jaza Percival 5^th, while in the Women’s Recurve Julie-Ann Williams took 1^st Place, while Bibi Saleema Salim came in 2^nd, and Theresa Deoroop 3^rd.

The judges for the competition were Elizabeth Mason and Umasankar Madray.
