Dear Editor,
The recent statement made by the OVP which mentions “One Guyana being hollow”, and that politicians like President Jagdeo must be willing to “acknowledge and atone for the terrible mistakes made and atrocities and injustices committed”, is selective, mischievous and neglectful of the atrocities committed by the PNC during pre-independence.
The author for the OVP also deliberately ignores the heartless insult that has been hoisted upon the Indian community of Guyana. Every year, we are faced with an independence date, which neglects the remembrance of the Wismar Massacre and adds insult to injury through its celebratory activities. This was the doing of the infamous Dictator President Burnham and the PNC. Where is the acknowledgment of the atrocities committed during that period? Where is the acknowledgment of the atrocities committed by PNC supporters every time they lose an election? Where is the acknowledgment of the persecution and suffering meted out to the Indian community at the hands of PNC supporters during the last election?
From the time of the Wismar Massacre to now, the violence experienced by the Indian community at the hands of PNC supporters has been continual. Not too long ago, devoted followers of Dictator Burnham were on the verge of repeating the dictatorial mistakes of his past. Roads were blocked and Indians were assaulted.
The OVP would have the public believe that a dictator was a saviour. We all know what betrayal is and was. He betrayed the true Father of this Nation, the one who gave him an opportunity and included him in the struggle for independence. To fulfill his selfish desires and thirst for power he betrayed His Excellency President Jagan! Dictator Burnham left the Nation bankrupt and our citizens suffering. He nationalized profitable foreign businesses and mismanaged them. So please, do not ask the youth of our country to embrace he who betrayed our prosperity and he who betrayed the steadfast and loyal. Do not ask us to embrace as a Father of Our Nation someone who orchestrated the killing of so many Indian lives in the lead up to “Approved Independence”. Do not ask us to embrace he who selected the date for Independence as an ongoing threat to the well-being of the largest community in our country. A dictator rules by fear, and that was Dictator Burnham’s intent. We will not accept him as the Father of our Nation. We will not revere a callous and cruel dictator as a liberator. We will not place on a pedestal he who brought suffering to every corner of our country!
His ideas were bankrupt, corrupt and self-serving. He was known in Guyana as one of the richest men in the world, yet the people of Guyana could not receive proper healthcare. His demise was his own doing. Neglect for the needs of his own citizens led to the neglect of his own needs. That is the poetic justice handed out to a heartless dictator whose party betrayed the true Father of Our Nation and the Citizens of Guyana. If his way of governing was allowed after the 2020 elections, the country would have been sanctioned and embargoed once again. Poverty would have returned to our people, and the land of Essequibo would be in the hands of Venezuela. So please, don’t tell us lies and try to selectively ignore the pain and suffering that a selfish dictator brought to our shores.
For there to be reconciliation, we must start with the acknowledgment of the atrocities of the Wismar Massacre. We must allow for the remembrance of the victims, and we must shift the date of Our Nation’s Independence to when it truly occurred, which was when His Excellency President Jagan won the British Guiana general election in 1953. The date of April 27th is of more significance to our people. It is the date when the true Father of Our Nation was elected to liberate Guyana and all of our citizens.
Sincerely,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
