Dear Editor,
In yet another blatant disregard for profession ethics and in contravention of the cricket administration act, the cricket administrators in Guyana seem to have missed the boat on proper conduct of their business, especially when the man holding the highest office in Sports pledges his full support regardless of the “dark forces at work”.
The National Sports Commission is supposed to be the arbiter of disputes in matters affecting the local sporting bodies in Guyana, at least, in my humbled opinion, in the case of the Guyana Cricket Board, as envisaged by the cricket Administration Act, which states in Part 5 (15) “The Guyana Cricket Board and every County Board shall each, not later that the 31stday of May each year, present to the National Sports Commission copies of the auditor’s report and the annual report on its work and activities for the period of twelve months preceding the date of the report, and the plan of action and activities of the Board for the ensuing twelve months”.
A few months ago, I read in various news articles that the Demerara Cricket Board had its elections and Chaitram Ramdial and Associates was appointed its auditors. The principal of this firm is Chaitram Ramdial, a commissioner of the National Sports Commission.
Now at least we can suggest that this is a conflict of interest, but it gets more interesting as the President of the Demerara Cricket Board, re-elected to that position, is also a member of the National Sports Commission. He is also the president of the Guyana Cricket Board, who just extended his term of office to three 4-year terms. Guyana nice.
A controversial issue with the accounts or the programme of the GCB or DCB could apparently be settled by these two along with the other Commissioners, one from Hockey, one from Tennis and one from football. If those disciplines have an issue then…. use your imagination.
Recently also, the Guyana Cricket Board published an expression of Interest to do a “Value for Money” audit of the Berbice Cricket Board, guess who did that job, yesssss, Chaitram Ramdial and Associates. Maybe nothing much came out of it as the audit report has become state secret.
Now, I do not know much of Mr. Ramdial and his firm other than the firm’s name was mentioned in association with an Audit of Exxon expense account, and my first thought being, big money earner. Am sure this is a very professional gentleman and his firm is reputable to land such a job, hence no bad intentions.
Am just suggesting that there may be a serious conflict of interest sitting as an NSC Commissioner and accepting jobs to audit Accounts of sporting associations, especially Cricket Boards, which has a mandate to submit their accounts to the Commission, on which you sit by presidential appointment.
The problem is with the recommendation coming from those advising the president on these appointments and a clear definition, upon being appointed, of the commissioners’ mandate.
And then comes Guyana Olympic Association Elections, check the names on the list of candidates for office and the controversy gets bigger. Or is the Chairman of the NSC running his private football competition. Apparently in Guyana we take up positions for the perks.
Come on Mr. President, it’s a ticking time bomb.
Confused Sports Entusiasts,
Rafzia Shaheed.
