Dear Editor,
Every morning after my devotions, the very first thing I do is peruse the sports news in the daily newspapers. I must say that the recent news emanating from the gallows of the Guyana Olympic Association, somewhat serve as a deterrent to my usual excitement to read the news. Mr Juman Yassin has been the President for the GOA for almost three decades – the same age range of my youngest child. In those decades under his leadership, Guyana’s representation at the Olympic Games has produced nothing more than “excellent effort” or “the experience was good” coupled with a plethora of complaints from our athletes about the paltry support they receive from the GOA.
In recent days, I have read the shouts of disenfranchisement of persons and federations from voting at the elections. The loudest screams of “unfairness” have come from Mr Robin Singh who is the president of the Guyana Baseball League and Mr Juman Yassin, who is the President of the Guyana Fencing Association as well as the outgoing President of the GOA.
I’m sure that many sports enthusiasts like myself who look forward to reading local sports news have never stumbled on any article of activity from Baseball nor Fencing in years.
The fact that these two inactive Federations fall under the management of Messrs Yassin and Singh, speaks volumes of their incompetence to lead any sporting body in the shores of Guyana.
Mr Yassin has overstayed his welcome at the GOA by at least two decades and Mr Singh’s inability to hold basic baseball tournaments are good reasons for none of them to be close to sport.
Yours Truly,
Clement Fredericks.
