– Guyana wins IGG Cycling title
By Rawle Toney
Kaieteur News – Sherwin Sampson led a ‘1-2-3’ finish for Guyana yesterday at the Inter Guiana Games (IGG) cycling Road Race on West Demerara as the home side dominated the final event for the discipline at the tri-nation event.
Guyana entered the road race with a 12 (points) to nine (points) lead over Suriname in the IGG cycling championship after Friday’s time trial in the National Park.
Sampson, who had the fourth-fastest time in the Park, took things personally and spearheaded a blistering attack on the Surinamese in the race that started at Schoonord, proceeded to Bushy Park (Parika) and then returned to the finish line outside the National Track and Field Centre at Edinburg.
Sherwin Sampson is all smiles as he crosses the finish unchallenged to win the IGG cycling road race.
Considered one of Guyana’s best young cyclists, Sampson lived up to the billing and clocked one hour, 19 minutes, 11.88 seconds (1:19:11.88).
His teammates Alexander Leung and Aaron Newton came in second and third respectively approximately 45 seconds apart.
Adjani Cutting and Mario Washington were the other cyclists representing Guyana in the IGG. All the Guyanese cyclists came in ahead of the Surinamese.
The results yesterday saw Guyana winning the cycling IGG Championship, scoring 33 points.
