Nov 23, 2022 Letters
Dear Editor,
In the September 2022 Glenn Lall’s showdown interview where he clobbered the Vice President, the VP had dodged the question whether Exxon will pull out of Guyana if contract renegotiation was requested. Glenn: “You honestly believe that Exxon will close operations and leave Guyana if we ask for more royalty?” VP Jagdeo said: “I don’t know, I don’t know, you asked for short answers, do you know?” The man who usually knows all things, did not know this time.
Now comes the headline: ‘Govt. fears renegotiation of Exxon contract will chase away investors, hurt country’s reputation – Minister Bharrat (KN, Nov. 18, 2022).’ Our Oil Minister – a former computer teacher – is parroting the Government’s position. The fact is people are beating down the doors to get to Guyana because they know we have a basement bargain ‘Dollar Tree’ sale going on. They know that we have the worst oil contract in the history of oil in the world, and our leaders do not want to change that. They think our political leaders are push-overs and ‘packoos,’ and as we would say at Whim, “if you ketch a packoo, buss he back.” That’s what the major oil companies have been doing to Guyana.
The foreigners know that we are ‘loosey goosey’ when it comes to oil governance, oil monitoring, environmental monitoring, enforcement of rules on taxes/duties/insurance, auditing and accountability, and that we are generally ill-prepared, lack capacity, and inexperienced to manage oil. They know that our Politicians are open to ‘su-suing’ and can be bought and that they will sell their country out. They know that both the Government and the Opposition stand with foreign investors against the people of Guyana. The foreigners call the shots, and we salute, “Yes, Sir.” Jagan, Burnham, and Rodney would have been so disappointed that all their anti-imperialist, anti-colonialist education have been tossed aside at such a time as this.
The Oil Minister is reported as saying, “it could not only risk chasing away Investors but even hurt the country’s reputation as a safe haven for companies’ investments.” Does the Minister forget that he is supposed to be talking up for Guyana, not the exploiters? Guyanese hoped oil would be the safe haven that will make all Guyanese rich, as in the Middle Eastern oil countries. Instead, the oil is making all the foreigners filthy, deliriously rich, while our people live hand-to-mouth. Our Politicians are more concerned about buttering up foreigners here to ship away our wealth under easy, give away terms and conditions, some of which apparently violate Guyana’s laws. Why? The Minister is concerned about foreigners “investments being “secured.” Our people want their present and future to be secured too. It’s “Our Wealth and Our Country” but we the ordinary people are suffering, while we read headlines how the oil companies here are boasting of Guyana being their “crown jewel” while we are the crumbs jewel.
Since they are making historic, unprecedented profits in Guyana, where we pay their taxes, oil companies will never leave Guyana, if the Government asks for renegotiation of the Stabroek Block. The PPP and PNC must stop being wimps and become ‘One Guyana’ in fighting for more income for its people. You can’t complain about only 8% salary increases and fail to be advocates for renegotiation. KN and SN have been educating us about that renegotiation is the linchpin to a better like for all. Wake up Guyana!
Sincerely,
Dr. Jerry Jailall
