Dear Editor,
I have known begging in Guyana to be of the street beggars at markets, Ferry stellings and some door to door beggars, along with those who target nicely dressed people asking for a raise. But now it looks like begging has innovated in Guyana with Teachers calling on businesses for food items for starving children and now, as reported by KN, businesses are begging, Guyanese are also calling for an increase to the remittances from their diaspora relatives, mind you it takes bravery and courage to beg strangers for something.
Everyone knows thieving is now an epidemic in Guyana based on their own experiences, police and news reports. It also takes bravery and courage to thief except for Government officials who do it as it’s the normal for them. Every foreigner who speaks of Guyana even when they mention something nice of Guyana, they have to also mention the begging and thieving. So will we be seeing begging from hospital staff for patients in the hospital? Will we see begging from sports organizations for their athletes and workers?
So, Guyanese you will sacrifice your pride and bravery to support your political leaders and party, while resorting to thieving and begging to survive? This is how you want the world to know and remember you? Remember nothing good comes easy unless you’re lucky or corrupt which is for a minute few people. So Guyanese, you would rather look for a spot on the streets to beg, or prowl the streets looking for your next victim to steal from? Why don’t you use the streets instead to protest for your share of over two trillion US$ dollars of Guyana’s riches?
Why aren’t you joining the protests? This is a glorious chance for you to get support if you prove you are fighters for the people or do you want to wait till election time and get no seats. A great king facing invasion of his kingdom motivated his people to fight with a speech which included “ People you can choose to die on your feet or live on your knees to the invaders, as living on your knees will only bring misery and torment upon you by the invaders”. Guyanese once more you have a choice, how do you want to be known and remembered, as beggars, thieves or fighters?
Yours faithfully,
R. David
