CG United Super50
By Sean Devers in Trinidad
Kaieteur News – The Guyana Harpy Eagles face-off with defending Champions Trinidad & Tobago Red Force in the second round of matches in Zone ‘A’ of CG United Regional Super50 at the Brain Lara Academy from 2pm today under lights.
The Red force comes into today’s match on the back of a 7-wicket win overs CCC at Tarouba.
Akeal Hosein had 4-38, while Jayden Searles and Sunil Narine took two wickets for the Red Force who reached 120-3 with Kjorn Ottley making an unbeaten 65 in reply to CCC’s 119 all out.
Harpy Eagles were beaten by 28 runs by Windwards Volcanos who made 296-4 before bowling out Guyana for 268 despite a fluent top score of 48 from Tagenarine Chanderpaul.
The last time these teams met was in the last year’s Final in Antigua when Red force won by 152 runs after Lendl Simmons (146) and Evin Lewis (57) added 121 for the first wicket to see the Red Force to 362-5.
Romario Shepherd had 2-105 from 10 overs for Guyana who fell for 210 despite an unbeaten 97 from Bajan Raymond Reifer as Ravi Rampaul (4-52) and Jayden Searles (3-40) did the bulk of the damage with the ball.
With the 34-year-old Narine back for the ‘White ball’ tournament after not playing the Four-Day format, his vast experience of 165 wickets in 101 matches at this level will be of eminence value to his side, whose 13 titles is the most by any team.
Many would remember Narine’s demolition of Guyana’s batting line-up in the 2015 final at the Oval.
Jason Mohammed’s undefeated 117 had led Red Force to 200-8 with Permaul taking 3-22, before Narine’s 6-9 from eight overs dismantled Guyana for 65 which is their lowest total in List ‘A’ cricket.
Permaul and Anthony Bramble are the only surviving members of that team so there won’t be too many mental scares from that night.
Today, the Red Force will bank on 36-year-old Jason Mohammed with six centuries from 112 matches at this level and the experienced Daren Bravo along with young guns; Ottley, Joshua Da Silva, Nicolas Pooran and Jud Goolie who played in the 2016 U-19 World Cup which West Indies, under Hetmyer’s captaincy won, to contribute with the bat.
The Red Force, with the advantage of playing a Day/Night game this venue, will to look to pacers Searles and Shannon Gabriel for an early break through while the spin pack will be led by Narine, Hosein, Yannic Cariah and Mohammed.
The Harpy Eagles are unlikely to change their team and will hope that their batters convert 20s and 30s into big fifties and at least one of them carry on to a hundred.
Chanderpaul is Guyana’s last Test selectee and looked the most fluent of batters on Monday. It was pleasing to see him bat with positive intent without being reckless while demonstrating good shot selection and the ability to rotate the strike.
His demise was orchestrated more by a stupendous catch than a bad shot and he could be the one to bat through the innings and try to score a century.
Tevin Imlach also looked the part but must be very disappointed how he got out while the Skipper has to get consistent big scores since at 35, he will know that leadership skill along will not keep him in the team.
Shimron Hetymer is supremely talented and looked eager to perform in Monday’s game. He needs to focus more and try to temper his aggression and still score centuries in this tournament.
The others like Sinclair, Rutherford, Shepherd and Pestano has the strength to hit sixes but they must also learn; just hitting boundaries without trying to work balls into gaps and run hard for twos, with not constantly win matches.
Guyana’s bowlers need to understand their roles in different situations and be consistent by making the batters work for their runs without bowling so many ‘four balls’.
Guyana, with nine titles but since 2005, can’t afford too many early losses since the pressure to win at the back end when the pitches will be more worn-out, could make qualifying for Antigua that more difficult.
There was a rain in Port-of-Spain just after the Guyanese had finished their morning practice session at the oval and the forecast for today is for overcast conditions with the possibility of thunderstorms.
