Kaieteur News – President Irfaan Ali on Saturday handed over a cheque of $3M to the Mainstay/Whyaka Village for a water treatment facility.
The community’s Toshao, Ms. Yvonne Pearson, during an interview with this publication said that the project is already a potential means of income for the community. The Toshao told Kaieteur News that the venture will not only provide potable water for its residents, but will also generate funds. “We want to have better drinking water for our people because some of us are buying water to drink, including myself. At the same time though, we want to launch a business, where the same water can be sold to non-community members.”
Toshao Pearson went on to say, “We have already identified the place where the operation will take place and we have a quotation of the equipment that needs to be purchased, so we will be bottling water under our own brand… We have the Mainstay resort, which is a private business. They also buy water for their resort, so we are also looking at them as a potential buyer as well.”
President Ali made the presentation while delivering the feature address at the village’s Amerindian Heritage celebration on Saturday afternoon last. Apart from the water treatment imitative, he also announced that the government has set aside funds and machinery to expand Guyana’s “best pineapple” production in the area.
The President also updated residents on the projects earmarked for the community, and disclosed that the first two marine cages have arrived in the country and will be set up after the heritage celebrations. “We do not only want to build infrastructure; we want to build activities around the infrastructure,” said His Excellency.
