Kaieteur News – The Police Force on Friday stepped up its presence at the National Park located at Thomas Lands, Georgetown, to make sure that there was no chaos at the Emancipation J’ouvert held there.
As a result of their efforts, they were able to seize a “taped-up” toy gun, a number of improvised weapons, scissors and lighters from patrons who attended the J’ouvert celebration. The items were found on the patrons while they were entering the venue.
The J’ouvert celebration was one of the planned party events leading up to August 1 Emancipation Day observance. Guyanese turned up in their numbers to celebrate at the National Park on Friday to participate in the fete of paint and water. The security presence there made sure that the party was incident free.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), there were no reports of robberies or other violent behaviour at the J’ouvert.
Recently, during Guyana’s Independence celebrations in May, the Force came in for criticism after guns were fired at a show held at the same venue called “Baderation”.
The show had featured Jamaican dancehall artiste, “Skeng”. While he was performing his fourth song, a hit, called “Protocol”, gunshots rang-out from the crowd and it rained bottles from the skies causing panic and chaos at the venue.
The following day videos surfaced of patrons being robbed amidst the chaos. Many questions were asked as to how patrons were permitted to enter the venue with illegal weapons despite heavy police and security presence.
To date, there has been no arrests made in relation to the gunshots and robberies that marred the “Baderation” show.
