My Testimony

Kaieteur News – Ever since I was a child, I had envisioned what adulthood would look like for me.  In childhood naivety I saw everything falling into place much like the fairytales where the knight in shining armour always comes, rescues the damsel in distress, they fall madly in love and live happily ever after.
Fast forward to adulthood, indeed I felt like a damsel in distress for far too long, who, instead of waiting, went hunting for her knight in shining armour since, at one point, I became convinced he’d lost his way and probably needed saving himself; I became the knight at times.

When I wasn’t on a rescue mission, I was becoming entangled with others whom I’m convinced were just as confused about life as I was.

Long story short, I’ve come to realise that I had no business venturing out into our complex world, without a proper navigation system, to find my significant other – and I do believe while there are many options, there is a most suitable mate that awaits each of us, if we are patient enough.

I hardly have regrets, but for helping to ruin some lives, especially while I masqueraded as a female knight in shining armour, I am indeed remorseful.

But the experience I gain was not in vain for at this phase of my life I am much wiser. As such, I know exactly what not to do in the quest for a lasting relationship.
Never become impatient
Impatience will only drive you to desperation, which in turn impairs your judgment and this, more often than not, will make you settle for less rather than what you really deserve. I’ve learnt that it is important to never run ahead of yourself in desperation thinking you cannot be alone a few more years than the average person.

As you bide your time, focus on a noble mission – preferably one that helps others, as in helping others you can achieve a purpose for living which gives you personal gratification.

Since I am guided these days by the biblical scriptures, I think we can safely take a cue from Ruth, who though widowed, opted to remain supportive to her mother-in-law rather than rushing to move on with her life (Ruth 1:16). This in the end paid off since it was through loving loyalty to her mother-in-law, she was able to find her Boaz. Boaz knew he had found a keeper when he learnt all that Ruth had done for her mother-in law. He said to her: “I’ve

 

been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband—how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. May the LORD repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the LORD…” – Ruth 2:11-12

Together they created the lineage for one of the greatest biblical kings of all times – King David – and the Lord and Saviour, Christ Jesus.

Appropriate timing

In being patient, you are able to see everything concerning your life unfold at the appropriate time. So, especially the ladies, we really ought to pay little or no attention to our so-called biological clock for that does not determine your lot in life, God does.
As such I’m convinced that, depending on the choices you make, everything unfolds right on time and not a minute late. Take a look at the biblical account of Abraham’s wife, Sarah, who at the ridiculous age of 90 produced her first child. This was of course based on a promise God made to her husband that she would be the mother of nations (Genesis 17:16). So be assured, time is not of the essence when it comes to pairing and procreating with your significant other. As such, you need not be in a mad rush to take matters into your own hands, you just might mess things up.

Learn to love

In waiting, above all, we must learn to love and this must start with you first availing yourself to the Creator who wrote the manual on how to love.

As much as we would like to think people can fall in love at first sight at times, I’m inclined to believe that is unlikely. I am convinced, however, that there can lust at first sight. And trust me, love is absolutely not that feeling of ‘butterflies fluttering’ in the stomach that some of us have experienced when we encounter certain individuals – it might just be a case of indigestion.

If you cannot love yourself, there is no way you can truly love someone else and added to that, without the love of God in your heart, love is pretty much non-existent. Take time to get to know the one who created you and He will teach you what true love really is. (1 Corinthians 13:4 – 5 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.)

Essentially, love is hard but with the grace of God it can be achieved.

I am only now endeavouring to learn the art of loving my Creator, myself and others, and I am well aware I have ways to go.

What I have learnt well though, is that if your purpose is not driven by the Creator, life can take you down a rabbit hole, which over time can become so familiar that you feel incline to embrace it as your destiny.
If the choice you have made doesn’t feel right in your gut, it probably isn’t and you should run like Joseph did from aggressive temptation (Genesis 39:12), your life may depend on it.
Run into the open arms of the trusted Lord and Saviour, for He alone can steer you away from the far too many missteps that loom in this thing called life. In choosing help from the saviour, like I have, you will daily be more than a conqueror (Romans 8:35-39).
