GCB Women’s Inter-County T20 Tournament…
By Sean Devers
Pre-tournament favourites, Berbice, remained the only unbeaten team when they inflicted an eight-wicket defeat over Demerara at Everest yesterday in the second round of the GCB Women’s Senior Inter-County T20 cricket tournament.
Berbice crushed Essequibo by nine wickets at Albion on Friday to open their campaign with a win.
Demerara set 75 to win after batting first and being restricted to 74 – 7 when their 20 overs expired. Berbice reached 75 – 2 with 8.4 overs remaining to take the lead in four-team tournament, which also features a Select X1.
Berbice invited Demerara to bat on a heavy outfield and a track with some pace and bounce in good weather conditions. Only Skipper and West Indies player, Cherry Ann Fraser, who followed up her 43 in Berbice with 16, was the only batter to reach double figures.
Guyana’s off-spinner, Plaffiana Millington, captured 3-10 from four overs to take the Most Valuable Player Award.
When West Indies batter Mandy Mangru (5) walked past an arm ball from Millington after pulling the spinner over square-leg for four, two balls earlier it was 16-1.
It was soon 22-2 when the burly Latoya Smith was bowled by Millington before the handy Fraser and Lawshawna Toussaint provided a token of resistance with a 21-run partnership before the latter was removed by Dian Prahald at 43-3.
Akaze Thompson (9) and Fraser were Demerara’s main hope of posting a challenging total but Fraser, who is a level above the others, was run out five runs later and Thompson provided Millington with her third wicket.
It was always going to be hard total to defend against the best prepared team in the tournament.
When Berbice began their run chase, Sherica Campbelle, was dropped at first slip twice by Mangru and at second slip by Kaysia Shultz off the fired up Fraser, charging in from Atlantic Ocean end.
Campbelle and Katana Mentore survived the impressive opening burst and put together 47 before Campbelle tried to clear long-on a was taken by Fraser off Mangru for 26.
Thompson, who replaced Fraser, also used the overcast conditions well and troubled the batters but although West Indies batter Shabika Gajnabi (1) was removed by off-spinner Latisha Jordon, who had 4-7, including a hat-trick on Friday in Berbice, Mentore (19) and Shanetta Grimmond (12) saw their team to another emphatic win.
In the morning game, Essequibo led by a well compiled 43 from Skipper Kumari Persaud and 10 from Navika Narine, gave their team a 57-run first wicket stand before they eventually reached 107-4.
The Select X1 were restricted to 84-7 with Skipper Sara Amin top scoring with 17 as Nafeeza Sabar (3-12) and Analesia D’Aguiar (2-18) did the damage with the ball for the lasses from Guyana’s largest County.
The competition continues tomorrow at Everest with another double header.
