Kaieteur News – Government has announced plans to improve on patients’ experience at healthcare facilities across the country and in this regard, this year, it will be upgrading some 43 health centres and health posts in Region One.
The disclosure was made by Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, who noted during his COVID-19 update on Friday that $100 million has been put aside to upgrade these facilities in that region.
“So in Region One, we have been able to do an assessment of the health facilities there. We have about 51 health centres and health posts in Region One and this year, having consulted with the region, we recognised that many of these facilities require minor upgrading,” he said.
According to the Minister, the upgrades will look mainly at developing waiting areas for patients as well as adding washrooms to these facilities. “So we have set aside $100 million to do these types of upgrades to the health centres and we will be upgrading 43 health centres with the 100 million that we have provided,” he related.
Works, the Minister said, have already started in the region and he noted that in the next three months’ times, the projects are scheduled to be completed.
As was reported in this year’s budget, the health sector was allocated just over $73 billion. Out of that, the sum of $1 billion was allocated for the upgrading of health centres across all regions in order to address critical interventions needed to improve patients’ experience.
Similar to what has been happening in Region One, the Minister had mentioned in a previous interview that 16 health centres in Region Seven will be upgraded too.
Kaieteur News understands that another $100 million will be spent on works at those facilities.
