Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – It has recently come to light that there is a possibility that boosters may be required to enter Guyana. Worldwide, the Omicron variant is rolling through countries. Here in Guyana, over 90 percent of private businesses are not checking customers for vaccination status. My favourite driver from one of the well-known Georgetown taxi companies has a fake vaccine card, which he surely got with the help of some medical personnel. Included in this mix are those fully vaccinated, yet pictured maskless indoors even in public settings. We are in our third year living with COVID-19. Realistically, those who have not been vaccinated, regardless of country of residence, are unlikely to get vaccinated. For this prolific writer who is double vaccinated with Pfizer, a booster will be taken with much reluctance; but the booster only lasts for 10 weeks. Then what? What is the possibility of individuals getting boosted over and over again? At the moment, very unlikely. The country of Israel is now on their fourth vaccine jab. Britain has just removed most of their COVID restrictions. The messaging has to change. COVID will be here for many years, with the possibility of different variants paying us a visit. In English, COVID is not going anywhere soon. We just have to learn to live with COVID, tighten the screws on the unvaccinated as some European countries have done and keep everything open.
