Kaieteur News – Cricket West Indies Masters Association (CWIMA) in a release has extended its warmest felicitations and commiserations onto our legendary former West Indies Captain, Sir Clive Lloyd on his ascension to knighthood on Wednesday at Windsor Castle.
We understand that Sir Clive was due to receive this prestigious award since last year, but the ceremony had to be delayed because of COVID-19. Sir Clive is the 13th West Indies cricketer to be knighted since Sir Frank Worrell first received his honor in 1964. The other 11 West Indians who have been knighted for their services to cricket are: Curtley Ambrose, Gordon Greenidge, Charlie Griffith, Reverend Wes Hall, Conrad Hunte, Vivian Richards, Richie Richardson, Andy Roberts, Garfield Sobers, Clyde Walcott and Everton Weekes.
CWIMA salutes these West Indian heroes!
Sir Clive has been the most successful captain of the West Indies senior team both at the test and the ODI level during the halcyon days of the 20 years span commencing from the mid-70s right up until the mid-90s. West Indies cricket was at its very best during this period when we ruled the world with our 4-prong pace attack instigated by the “Supercat” himself as the formula for our success.
Our first taste of international success was when Sir Clive lifted the inaugural World Cup in 1974 and then again in 1979. During this 20-year span of unprecedented West Indies success around the world, several quality players in our Caribbean region fell by the wayside since it was super difficult to get selected to that all conquering West Indies team. CWIMA is currently unearthing those players that could not have made the cut during those glory days of West Indies cricket and we hope that these accolades and rich history of our glory period can help to rekindle the spirit and commitment for the future success of West Indies teams at all levels, youths, seniors, and masters.
